Amy thank you for sharing your post. I find it astonishing that there was not one person who stood up to this bully. Jobs are jobs, you were good enough to work at Uber, you are good enough to work plenty of other places. NEVER let anyone disrespect you ever under any circumstance. And to the people on your team, you should have stopped it, I find it amazing no one yelled at their boss. F HIM. I DO NOT CARE IF ITS THE CEO, I WILL STOP IT WHEN I SEE IT. Because Jobs are Jobs, people are the MOST important part of companies. We have to protect their people, even when they are too dumb to realize a “brilliant jerk” will ruin a team of brilliance. The next time this happens (and it will), challenge them immediately, let them know what they did and that it is not acceptable, and if it happens again you will take action. Example, “I am not sure if you heard what you just said to me, allow me to retort you said ‘insert snippet of their statement’, I find that beyond disrespectful and I cannot work with you if you are going to continue to treat me without respect.”. There are better lines, but you get the point, talk to your friends to get ideas & have them ready ! Bad on Uber for letting this happen, but NEVER let anyone talk down to you ever. You have to take respect, I know it’s difficult, but it is the only way you get it in life, it is rarely given. I hope people reading this recognize I am not telling Amy it’s her fault in any way shape or form. It is not. It’s assholes faults. And you find assholes in bad cultures. It’s common. The problem at Uber is public it will be dealt with, these people will receive what they deserve, but then they go on somewhere else (become someone elses problem) and you go somewhere else and you will find more brilliant jerks you have to deal with. I hate to say it, the attitude of the brilliant jerk is common in tech, (btw this asshole isn’t brilliant he’s dumb I can tell by what he said, but still the term brilliant jerk I use generally) and women get it the worst, being young makes it worse (man or woman) you find a lot of managers taking advantage of your dignity. DO NOT LET IT HAPPEN, EVER. Nail them with your prepared rebuttals, have them ready, take your respect so you can get back to changing the world with your talent. The truth is, BECAUSE you are a woman you have power, the real men in this world won’t let you be treated like that. If I was there, I would have nailed this asshole I promise, but since I wasn’t I am utterly disappointed by the people on your team. No matter what, not all of them are bad people, they just live in fear, they don’t know how to take their respect. Learn to take yours. Don’t earn it, TAKE IT. Regain your spirit, move on, and next time, punch them in the balls verbally and take your respect. I’ve done it, you would be amazed at the results. Thank you for sharing your heart Amy :-( Best of luck.
